One of the yearnings in human beings is TO KNOW. Curiosity is generally inherent in higher brained animals but an itch unbearable for humans. May not be the priority of the moment but this yearning to know is actually more powerful than any of the other obvious needs such as food, shelter, etc. So this need is rightly positioned in the top tier in Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs.
If one can observes, even spirituality and science, both known to the common folk as sworn rivals, are both in fact searching zealously in opposite directions to solve the same mystery: unlock the riddles of the universe. They are conflict with each other because they speak in different languages.
Enlightenment (since I dont know of another better word for the state) I gather that it is the total understanding (maybe just acceptance) of everything in the universe. I also gather, from my readings, that enlightened ones would feel a sense of total calm. They also then tend to be extremely quiet and unfazed by events around then. They do not want to change anything. It is probably because they now feel everything in the universe is in its place and everything is right. Their quench for knowledge (of everything) is now satiated.
One path to this state, that I refer to as enlightenment, is Jnana yoga or the Path of Wisdom. Instinctively urged to follow this path one assimilates as much understanding as he can about the universe. Either through one source or varied, though the Hindu scriptures claim that understanding the Vedas would suffice.
But how could just amassing something like 'understanding' lead to enlightenment? Well I understand that at the point of the so-called enlightenment our brains are COMPLETE with all findings. Well not exactly complete with everything in the universe but at least the basic findings such as all the underlying basic rhythms and patterns of the universe, most fundamental equations in the universe. And the brain is perfectly capable of processing what it contains and thus the being is in the state of absolute understanding. Physically speaking this may indicate a brain complete with : all possible electrical connections; all patterns possibly recognizable by a human brain.
